Vietnam War

The Vietnam War was a lengthy, costly, and controversial battle pitting North Vietnam's communist government against South Vietnam and its main ally, the United States. The ongoing Cold War between the US and the USSR exacerbated the tension. The Vietnam War claimed the lives of approximately 3 million people, including over 58,000 Americans, with Vietnamese civilians accounting for more than half of those killed.

Even after President Richard Nixon signed the “Paris Peace Accords” and ordered the evacuation of US forces in 1973, opposition to the war remained fierce in the United States. Communist forces won the war by capturing control of South Vietnam in 1975, and the country was unified as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam the next year.

Women in Vietnam War

Women participated in a wide range of roles during the Vietnam War, both making substantial contributions to the war and being impacted by it. Several million Vietnamese women served in the military and militias during the conflict, mainly in the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam, popularly known as the Viet Cong, where the motto "when war comes, even the women must fight" was extensively employed. These women made significant contributions to the Ho Chi Minh Trail, including espionage, medical treatment, logistical and administrative work, and, in some cases, direct combat against opposing forces. Civilian women had a tremendous impact during the war, with women laborers taking on increased economic roles and legal women's rights increasing in Vietnam.

Women rose to prominence as anti-war peace campaign leaders in Vietnam and around the world, as well as substantial contributions to war journalism. Women, however, continued to experience considerable levels of discrimination during and after the conflict, and were frequently targets of sexual abuse and war crimes. After the war, several Vietnamese women veterans struggled to reintegrate into civilian society and have their services recognized, while certain advancements in women's rights established during the war were not preserved. Fictional depictions of the conflict have also been attacked for their portrayal of women, both for ignoring the role of women in the war and for reducing Vietnamese women to racist caricatures. Women are leading movements to address post-war issues, including the long-term effects of Agent Orange and the Lai Đại Hàn.
