In 1868, a Gold Rush pioneer finished a mansion of soft pink plaster on the floor of the Sacramento Valley, a three story Italianate villa crowned by a tower four stories tall and filled with comforts that almost no one in northern California had yet seen. Its builder had crossed the continent on the first organized wagon train of American pioneers, struck gold along the Feather River, and turned twenty-two thousand acres of raw country into one of the most admired estates in the American West.
