For over a century, the same strange sentence keeps appearing at the end of American newspaper reports: the bones were shipped to the Smithsonian Institution for further study. This is a field report on the giant skeletons and giant bones that the Smithsonian collected, funded, or personally exhumed between the 1880s and 1911, pulled straight from the archival record. We move past commentary and read the primary sources aloud, naming the exact publication, date, and page for every claim.
From a gigantic skeleton unearthed at Bristol, Tennessee by a Bureau of Ethnology agent in 1883, to the New York Times report of "acres of skulls and bones" at the Etowah mounds, to a nine-foot king exhumed in Georgia with a copper crown and hair black as jet down to his waist, the reports pile up faster than the official record can explain them. We follow the trail through a San Diego cave mummy measured by a Smithsonian curator, a giant sealed inside a limestone tomb on Pine Ridge, and a skull so large a Smithsonian director said it surpassed anything in the entire institution.
