What if creating music wasn’t a process that happened inside of something, like a DAW, but was instead shaped through the physical space around you?
If you set out to make a tool like this, you might end up with something like Chris Zuko’s Mix Universe – a sandbox where, through a variety of nodes, connections, and triggers, you can construct your music in an expansive, traversable 3D environment.
This was made possible by Unreal Engine’s MetaSounds, a dynamic audio system designed by Epic that opens unique creative opportunities with its interactive approach. During out interview with Aaron McLaren, Epic’s lead audio programmer, Mix Universe was one of the projects he mentioned as showcasing MetaSound’s possibilities.
