Tamarind shrimp is a “very Thai” dish in my mind.
I’m not officially classifying dishes by any means, it’s just something I feel personally. To elaborate and to give an example, by contrast, pad see ew does not taste “very Thai” to me despite its ubiquity and popularity because it is a heavily Chinese influenced dish that retains much of its Chinese characteristics. And when you taste it, if you didn’t know, you might not be able to identify it as Thai.
