In this video, I discuss what the proposed Bitcoin soft fork BIP-110 actually does:
BIP-110 shrinks Bitcoin's attack surface by closing some of the most common holes that spammers use.
BIP-110 stops inscriptions, BRC-20 tokens, and large op returns from getting mined.
BIP-110 proclaims to the world that Bitcoin is a monetary network, and that if you try to use it for data storage, you will be considered a hostile attacker.
BIP-110 deters crypto VCs and founders from funding and launching companies that profit from Bitcoin spam.
BIP-110 delegitimizes Bitcoin Core devs who want to turn Bitcoin into Ethereum.
BIP-110 helps to refocus the community around Bitcoin as money, not data storage.
BIP-110 empowers Bitcoin node runners, by making it easier and cheaper to run a Bitcoin node (less spam in the chain means lower storage costs; fewer spam transactions means less bandwidth needs to be wasted downloading, uploading, relaying, and verifying garbage)
BIP-110 protects node runners from large op return CSAM being relayed or included in blocks. Large op return transactions will no longer be able to be relayed by nodes (regardless of filters) or mined by miners because they are not consensus-valid.
Today, we're in a really bad place, because so many people are running Bitcoin Core 30, which standardizes data storage up to 100,000 bytes on Bitcoin via op return.
What makes the op return space so special?
It's been the designated space (since 2014) recognized by all Bitcoiners everywhere (including the reference implementation) as the main place reserved by the system for arbitrary data.
It's a small space (or at least it was, before Core 30) that's allowed and blessed by the protocol as a space for data storage.
BIP-110 will allow us to return to a more sane time (pre-2023) when everyone understood that spamming the Bitcoin blockchain was considered a form of abuse, and not something to be promoted at Bitcoin conferences by people who invest in the companies that create the spam.
BIP-110 combined with good mempool filters creates more friction and higher costs for spammers and scammers.
