When you check the forecast and see a 30% chance of rain, it is easy to wonder what that number actually means. Does it mean rain will last for 30% of the day? Or that 30% of the area will receive rain?
Not quite.
The probability of precipitation, often shortened to PoP, describes the likelihood of receiving measurable precipitation at a specific location during a certain forecast period. Measurable precipitation is defined as at least one one-hundredth of an inch of rain or liquid equivalent.
