This 2000 Ford Ranger has no fuel pressure and will not start—even though the fuel pump was replaced only three months ago. Before dropping the fuel tank on a rusty Pennsylvania truck, I work through the circuit to prove exactly what is missing.

Along the way, an unexpected voltage reading sends the diagnosis in a different direction and creates a good lesson on verifying your test setup before chasing a result. We check pump current, power, and ground, explain the fuel-pump monitor circuit, and determine whether there is enough evidence to justify removing the tank.

Once the tank is down, we find out why the nearly new fuel pump failed. After the repairs are completed, we verify fuel pressure, start the engine, and explain how this mechanical return-less fuel system controls pressure.
