A cant strip is an angled roofing component used to provide a smoother transition for the roof membrane at the intersection between the horizontal plane of the roof and the vertical plane of a wall. Providing a less abrupt transition to these perpendicular intersections reduces the impact of the thermal stresses exerted on the membrane from expansion and contraction, thus reducing the risk of a membrane tear. A cant strip should be provided at any intersection between the horizontal plane of the roof and any adjacent walls or changes in roof elevation. Cant strips are especially important if the membrane is lapping over a parapet wall, as the membrane has to resist any kind of uplift at this location. 90° transitions challenge the membrane and its ability to adequately adhere to the substrate, exacerbated by thermal stresses, UV degradation, and the presence of moisture. Cant strips are crucial in applications where a thicker membrane is specified, such as a heavy-duty 90 mil EPDM, or a 240 mil thick modified bitumen roof, reducing the chances of voids underneath the membrane and the substrate, as well as cracks over time.
