Coping protects the top of the parapet wall from water damage, weathering, ultraviolet light, and general exposure to the exterior environment. Parapet coping can be composed of a range of different materials, but most commonly it is formed from light gauge galvanized or stainless steel, aluminum, or stone. Copings that are formed from metal act as a solid flashing component to kick water away from the walls. Both metal and stone coping on a parapet require an adhered flashing membrane underneath, as water will find a path past this first line of defense. In metal coping applications, water typically finds a path through any seams between coping pieces, or where the cleats meet the coping at the drip edge. Even if the seams are welded, there is still a chance that moisture or bulk water will get inside over time, as these components can corrode and rust, letting water into the parapet.
