In the final episode of Season 2, "Survival of the Fittest," X-Force and X-Factor set out to kill Gambit, to permanently end Apocalypse. Beast, Rogue and Nightcrawler find the wreckage of Ship in an effort to reverse the process that turned En Sabah Nur into Apocalypse. Rogue enters the Celestial Shrine where he gained his powers. Dr. Cooper refuses to allow Xavier to harbor Gambit and they begin their siege of X-Corp, while the X-Men buy time for Rogue. Rogue tries to convince the Celestial Eson to help, who first removes the amulet of power Gambit placed in her. Eson declares that life cannot advance with mercy and needs Apocalypse to advance through struggle. Rogue attempts to strike the Celestial, claiming that life can advance by fighting for love. Eson demands she proves this by sacrificing herself for Gambit. When she accepts, he provides her with the same power Apocalypse was given for one last fight. Rogue emerges with the Celestial power and flies off. Cable faces off against his parents as they attempt to reason with him. Storm and Forge attempt to disable Sentinels—internally controlled by humans—outside the tower. Wolverine and Morph face off against Archangel and Psylocke. Jubilee bests Havok in an aerial battle. Polaris and Bishop are overwhelmed by the other X-Factor members, until Gambit wakes up to help. Cable is forced to crumble the tower to fend off the X-Men and reach Gambit and shoot him in the head. This in turn, speeds up Apocalypse's reawakening, having fully taken over Gambit's body. Apocalypse incapacitates the X-Men and X-Force and takes over their minds, leaving only Xavier. Rogue arrives and cleanses them all, while sealing Apocalypse's mind in a crystal and gives it to Cable. Rogue and Gambit finally kiss, after which Rogue loses the Celestial power, but not her life, as Nightcrawler convinces Eson to sacrifice himself instead. In the aftermath, Mystique kills Dr. Cooper and assumes her identity as Graydon Creed is elected president of the United States of America.
