One of North America’s most famous railroad landmarks is Helmstetters Curve, which is located just west of Cumberland, MD on the former Western Maryland Railway. Today, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad operates here. The curve is named for the picturesque farm owned by the Helmstetter family. The family has long been friends to the railroad and the legions of photographers who have made pilgrimages here to compose and record the beauty of steam and diesel locomotives in this dramatic setting.

This scene was captured by Jonathan Eau Claire, for the Western Maryland program on the DVD “Steam Stars” from Yard Goat Images.
