Wes Anderson Suite

The Wes Anderson Suite features music from three of auteur director Wes Anderson’s best known movies: Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise Kingdom, and The Grand Budapest Hotel, most of which
was composed by Anderson’s frequent collaborator, Alexandre Desplat. Anderson’s films are known for painstaking attention to detail, and Desplat’s work complements his stylistic intricacies.
However, the arrangement begins with Benjamin Britten’s “The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.” This piece, from Moonrise Kingdom, passes a theme to each section of the orchestra (woodwinds, brass, strings, and percussion) before putting it back together. It reflects the film’s theme that the whole ensemble is greater than the sum of its parts. This idea is developed in “The
Heroic Weather Conditions of the Universe,” the main theme from Moonrise Kingdom.
Fantastic Mr. Fox has a rustic sound that ranges from the playful “Kristofferson” to the haunting “Canis Lupus.” The omnipresent glockenspiel in the background evokes Anderson’s world-in-min-
iature, a stop-motion English countryside. Desplat won an Oscar for his score for The Grand Budapest Hotel, and it was deserved— he invented folk music for the fictional Eastern European country of Zubrowka. These pieces, including “Daylight Express to Lutz” and “Mr. Moustafa” are subdued and wistful, yearning for the faint glimmers of civilization left in this barbaric slaughterhouse known as humanity...
