In the presidential election of 1940 Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt ran against Republican Wendell Willkie. President Roosevelt would win the election and become the first United States president to win a third term. Willkie, however, would not fade away after the election.
Wendell Willkie immediately began working with his former opponent to help with international strife and try to bring national unity. He worked with Roosevelt to pass the Lend Lease Program and made trips to Europe to show support for the war-torn countries which were facing the threat of Nazi Germany and the Axis Powers
On social issues such as racial equality Willkie would attack his own party and Roosevelt for not emphasizing the issues. Overall, though Willkie and Roosevelt enjoyed a camaraderie.
When it came time for the presidential election of 1944 Willkie would try to run again, but he failed to even get the nomination as it ended up going to Thomas Dewey.
In just the span of 1944 and 1945 both Willkie and FDR would die without seeing the end of the war.
