Four days after the firing on Fort Sumter, former president Franklin Pierce proposed a meeting of the five former presidents in an attempt for peace. He hoped a Union of the nation's former leaders could at least temporarily arrest the violence, and he also likely wanted to undermine the authority of the newly elected Republican president, Abraham Lincoln.
