Video footage taken on part of a photographic charter entitled ‘Welsh Narrow Gauge Heaven’ organised by Bob Branch and David Williams. Many thanks to them and all the railway staff for running this event which often took place under very challenging weather conditions.
The first part of the video features the Ffestiniog Railway with scenes shot mainly at Porthmadog and north of Tan-y-Bwlch including the famous spiral at Dduallt. George England & Co Ltd locomotives numbers 2 ‘Prince’ and 4 ‘Palmerston’ built in the 1860s are seen in action hauling vintage passenger stock. Double Fairlie number 10 ‘Merddin Emrys' of 1879 vintage is also seen hauling slate wagons at the same locations.
The second part of the video focusses on the Welsh Highland Railway with the recently restored George England number 6 ‘Welsh Pony’ and South African Beyer Garratts numbers 130 and 87 climbing the steeply graded curves at Rhyd Ddu. Garrett K1 is also seen in action. At the end of the day ‘Welsh Pony’ is also seen at the ‘Sea Wall’ a few miles north of Porthmadog.
