In this video from Wellness for Artists: Music, Movement, and Mindfulness, a Berklee Online course written by Jennifer Caraluzzi, guest speaker Jacqui Bonwell—a yoga and meditation expert—explains the importance of regulating your nervous system for high-quality sleep. The most important step, she says, is to have a routine before bedtime that is able to calm the busy mind and prepare your brain for a state of deep relaxation. This is also known as downregulation. Bonwell explains how the use of smartphones before bed can hinder your sleep because your brain cannot identify the difference between the light of your device and the light of the day. Some additional tips for a nightly routine include meditation, breathwork, abstaining from caffeine or alcohol before bed, or gentle stretching or movement.
