In this video from the Berklee Online course Berklee Keyboard Method, instructor Rebecca Cline teaches you how to play major triads on the piano by using the first five degrees of the major scale for guidance. Cline explains that to form a major triad, it is necessary to take off the 2nd and 4th degrees of the major scale, leaving only the 1st, 3rd, and 5th notes. When these notes are played together, you have formed a major triad, also known as a major chord. Cline demonstrates this by playing the C major scale, then the arpeggio of the triad, and then playing these three notes altogether.

The DAW will ask you whether the content of what you are trying to convert is harmonic, melodic, or rhythmic (for drums). Once you have the MIDI version of the audio file, you might notice it doesn’t sound exactly like the source material. This is because MIDI only gives the value of the notes (what note to play, for how long, and how intensely), but doesn’t actually provide any sort of sound for your notes. That’s why you are going to have to set up this MIDI with a virtual instrument of your choice. You can choose something to make it more similar to the source material, or you can try to make it sound like something completely different. Remember, these conversions don’t necessarily get every note right, so checking and editing is warranted. As with all things in Ableton Live, play around with it, and hear for yourself. And most importantly, he shares how the sounds captured by each method differ. Recording the sound of a guitar through an amplifier has a lot of advantages compared to a clean direct inject box (also known as a DI box), but recording the sound of an amp comes with many obstacles. Getting a specific tone right might be a challenge since there are a lot of factors involved: the model of the amp or guitar, where you place the microphone, the room itself, etc. Other challenges can arise when you try to rhythmically edit your guitar part. If it was recorded with a lot of distortion and effects, it can be hard to tell where your transients start or end. So having a DI recording as a “safety backup” can go a long way to getting the desired sound. It can help you rhythmically edit with more precision, and having a clean version of your recording is ideal in case anything goes wrong with the amplified version. Cline plays the first five degrees of the major scale and lowers the 3rd degree down a half step, which gives the chord its minor quality. Cline demonstrates this by playing the G major scale, lowering the 3rd degree down a half step so it becomes Bb, and finally playing the 1st, 3rd, and 5th degrees altogether. LaFitte explains how improvisation has existed for as long as music has existed and has been documented as a way to create music as far back as the Baroque era. Without improvisation, says LaFitte, we wouldn’t have cadences. Violinist Clara Rose Chisholm plays a Baroque song that consists of a simple melody, but the chords and harmony change. Through the violinist’s demonstration, LaFitte shows how implementing a simple improvisation technique can make a difference in the piece by adding more originality and different tones. She was also the principal oboist in the Boston Ballet Orchestra, the Boston Classical Orchestra, and the Rhode Island Philharmonic, as well as a member of the Boston Modern Orchestra Project. She can be heard on two recordings nominated for Grammy Awards: Boston Modern Orchestra Project’s recording of Stephen Mackey’s “Dreamhouse,” and Danilo Perez’s highly acclaimed jazz recording, “Providencia.” LaFitte is also the oboist on the theme music for the PBS program, “Frontline.” She has been a professor on the faculty of Berklee College of Music in Boston since 1994. She has also coached contemporary chamber ensembles and taught Woodwind Pedagogy at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee. LaFitte presents masterclasses about topics such as circular breathing, audition preparation, Nicolas Slonimsky, and more.
