Summer!
It’s hot! You are ready to grill out, spend time being devoured by mosquitoes and maybe go to the beach.
Let’s start with Colombia
Before talking about Colombia I have to give you a quick geography Lesson
(Professorial) So summer happens in the northern and southern hemisphere due to the tilt in the axis of the earth. The change is not significant in places close to the equator that are called tropical. Sped up.
So that means that in Colombia we really don’t have changing seasons. Does it mean it is hot all the time??? American: Bro you are used to the heat stop complaining.
NO! The reason is that we have mountains and the further up you go the cooler it gets. This makes it really cool because you can travel and find different climates. So let’s say you are in a cold city 8000 ft high like my hometown Bogota… Well you can travel 2 hours from the city, any time of the year and get some heat. So we get to choose when summer comes for us, but it is shorter. People go to hot places, go to swimming pools, drink a lot and then they go back to the cold city when they are tired of the heat. Unless you are from a hot city in which case summer is your lifestyle
Now let’s talk about Argentina. Going back to the geography lesson it is important to point out that Argentina has an opposite summer season. So summer there is in December, January and February. So summer hits argentina around christmas. Can you imagine christmas in July… THat is just a reality in the life of Argentinians and they do it all. THey have the tree the fake snow, the gift exchanging. The only difference is they get to do it outside. Random fact, I learned that argentinian women exchange pink underwear during christmas as a sign of good luck. Also summer is not summer in Argentina without asados or bbqs accompanied with a bottle of malbec… a bit classier than a bud light.
Now let’s talk about countries like Puerto Rico, Cuba and Dominican Republic. In these tropical paradises, summer is not a season. SUmmer is your life. My dominican friends always joked that in DR there were 2 seasons: verano e infierno. Summer and hell. That makes sense if I was from one of these countries I would have invented reggaeton and written despacito.
So for people in these countries do for summer, they vacation, and party but they also work and live normal lives.
Now if there is one thing that is universal about latinos during summer is a torture that all latino moms subject their kids to. Latino moms no matter how hot it is will give you a super hot soup.
