There is a disease as dangerous as Coronavirus affecting people around the world. The risks may be affecting you and your family right now.

Im talking about the extreme social contagion of anxiety and panic that is being spread through social media. Today I am going to talk about how to stay positive and motivated in this time of anxiety. Learning Spanish is at the core of this but also any passion and goals that you may have.

First of all I want to make clear that COVID-19 is indeed a big threat to our society, and we should follow the guidelines of the CDC and WHO to learn more about it. Not whatever crap we find in twitter. It is important to have good personal hygiene and stay home.

But today I want to talk about anxiety and how to channel all of that nervous energy into our goals. Through social media, misinformation there is a contagion of panic. I must confess it is something I have felt as well. There is uncertainty how what's gonna happen to our society as a whole and to our personal lives. My call is to change the tone of this conversation and instead of panic spread a message of love and positivism.

So in 1985 my fellow Colombian and nobel laured Gabriel Garcia Marquez wrote the Book Love in the time of Cholera, and just with that title I was sold. How can there be love when a disease is spreading around. How can we love in the time of corona? Well love starts by loving yourself and the best way to do this is to find purpose and stay busy in this purpose. Learning Spanish is a great example of something that can be part of your bigger purpose. Maybe you want to connect to other people around the world, maybe Spanish gives you hope and makes you think of travelling once this is over. Learning Spanish is not the only example of an act of love that you can make for yourself but it is a good one. I invite you to use this channel as a platform to share your ideas, routines and maybe even speak with each other remotely to offer language and emotional support.

In love in the time of Cholera Gabriel Garcia Marquez wrote. “The problem in public life is learning to overcome terror; the problem in domestic life is learning to overcome boredom.
This quote is a tell sign for what we need to focus on right now. We need to avoid the panic in public and in our households keep ourselves busy and motivated. This is an opportunity.

Now some of you may not know Gabriel Garcia Marquez. He was a Colombian writer mostly know for One hundred years of solitude (Also kind of relevant now) and love in the time of cholera. His style of writing is magical realism. Which was a Latin American trend in which quotidian life were all of the sudden showered with magic. This magic seemed normal to the characters of the book but it hides a deep meaningful messages.
Love in the times of Cholera is about the colera (a spanish term that means madness) of love. The madness of love. It compares love to a disease, all in the context of a cholera outbreak in Colombia. I have included links to both a Spanish and English version of love in the time of Cholera dn a hundred years of solitude. If you purchase using our link, you will support our channel so we continue making more content about spanish language and culture. ANd I recommend using these resources to stay motivated. The book will transport you to a similar time and era of fear and uncertainty, you can draw parallels and keep learning about hispanic culture.
