Check it Out!

So today we're looking at a weird crankcase cover on a Briggs and Stratton 20G414-0222-E1 engine, that's on a Craftsman Snowblower.

The issue is that the engine vents positive crankcase pressure from a small hole in the crankcase cover. Now crankcase pressure usually has a small amount of oil vapor in it, and the location of this hole aims it directly at the drive belt/pulley.

This oil vapor from the venting crankcase pressure slowly coats the drive belt and pulley, which will eventually lead to a slipping drive issue.

In this case, I used brake cleaner to remove any oil residue from the drive pulleys, then I replaced both the drive and auger belt.

To try and prevent this issue from happening again (without replacing the crankcase cover) I used a piece of Gorilla Tape on the back side of the plastic belt cover, to stop the crankcase from venting oil residue directly onto the drive belt and pulley.

Using model numbers and date of manufacturing codes, it appears that Briggs and Stratton updated the design some time between 2003 and 2010. However, the exact date of this change is not known to me.

With the limited information that the Briggs and Stratton website provides, I was able to figure out which part number matches which crankcase cover.

Part numbers as shown in the video;

Old crankcase cover with hole: 696914

New crankcase cover with divot: 791965

I will contact Briggs and Stratton some time in the near future to see if I can get an exact date on when this part was superseded (updated).
