ARE YOU LOOKING FOR YOUR PASSION?
“How do you find your passion?” I get this question from a lot of people.
It took me decades to arrive at my passion.
Don’t miss where you are and where this point in your life might be leading you. Here’s a short story. The son of a friend of mine joined the Marine Corps – He wanted to make it a career.
HE WANTED TO SERVE. After several deployment, seeing too many casualities and too much destruction he realized this wasn’t his passion.
He went back to school and get a masters degree in hospital administration,
HE WANTED TO SERVE.
He was successful at his job, got promoted, but he realized that this was not his passion. He wanted to be closer to the people.
He went back to school. He became a nurse. HE WANTED TO SERVE. This he still does, this he loves, I suppose he would call this his passion.
None of those other things were a waste of time. In each job he was exploring the world. Discovering new things about himself – things he loved, things he didn’t like so much, things he was great at and things he might have thought he was great at but wasn’t. Without going through this however, he may never have arrived at this place.
Be curious. Learn what you can where you are – you never know how it will serve you later. My guess is he learned things in the Marines and as an administrator that make him a better nurse today.
If you’d told him when he enlisted – Fred – study nursing – he probably would have laughed at the idea.
Some misconceptions about arriving at your passion.
- Every day will not be blissful – it’s great to find what you love, but it still takes hard work and showing up every day. Resistance is real and will greet you fresh every day.
- There will still be hard days. Everything doesn’t’ suddenly become easy. Keep at it. Keep Putting Your Ass Where Your Heart Wants To Be.
Be patient. It may not happen today, don’t worry about it. Follow the path you’re on, see where it’s leading you. You might be surprised.
