This documentary explores the motives and day-to-day realities of the prisoners and their wives-to-be who are trying to build serious relationships against very long odds.
For Zabrina, a 28 year old woman from Florida, it was the apparent spiritual conversion of her husband to be, cocaine dealer Damon Thrash, that was irresistible. That and his mesmerising eyes... Although Damon is only eight years into a 20 year sentence, Zabrina cannot wait to be ‘complete’ by marrying the man she calls the ‘love of her life’ and who managed to woo her almost entirely by letter. The kiss on their wedding day behind bars will be their first ever intimate contact.
Marzena is a Polish-born British woman whose husband was imprisoned on the island of Malta soon after they had become a couple. Marzena was pregnant when he was imprisoned and the couple got married soon after to permit them to have ‘conjugal visits’. Now Marzena is travelling from her home town in Wales to Malta in order to introduce him to their second baby – Blossom.
For Marines - a 35 year old from Puerto Rico – apart from anything else, marrying her partner is a chance to see him again having been barred from visits for three and a half years.
And then there’s Jenn, a young single mother of two, whose ex-husband walked out on her and the kids some time ago and who is now preparing to roll the dice one more time with a handsome devil called Brandon who’s serving a long stretch for armed robbery, and who she met via another inmate she was corresponding with.
With intimate access to prison brides in the run up to their wedding and access to the ceremonies themselves, this programme proves the old adage that ‘love moves in mysterious ways’.
