We explored an abandoned Japanese mountain school, closed since 1987 and left almost exactly as the children last saw it. High in the mountains of Nara, at the top of one of the most brutal school routes in all of Japan, Sam and I climbed a zig-zag path that pupils once walked every single morning, twenty minutes uphill over moss-covered stone steps. What we found at the top was a school frozen in time: books still on the shelves, school records dating back to 1965, children's drawings pinned to the walls, and the duty roster still hanging where the students left it, waiting for a morning broadcast that never came. But the real story is why it closed. Founded in 1873 down in the valley, the entire village was forced to move up the mountain in the 1950s when a dam flooded their home, and the school followed its people. Then the forestry industry collapsed, the young people left for the cities, and every year fewer children climbed that path. Schools all around the valley closed and merged into this one, until in March 1987 the last pupils walked down the mountain for the final time. This is the story of a school that watched its own village disappear.
