After being forced to withdraw from the high jump on the opening day of athletics due to patellar tendinitis, Tejaswin Shankar made a remarkable comeback just two days later to compete in the decathlon.

Despite the injury setback, India's decathlon national record holder ended Day 1 in 2nd place with 4339 points, just 14 points behind leader Damian Warner.

He also produced a lifetime best of 7.82m in the long jump, one of the standout performances of his opening day.
