We go hands on with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 remake of Star Fox, which mixes a new art style and fresh multiplayer mode in with what appears to be a mostly familiar story.
If you’ve played the original Star Fox back on NES, or indeed its more recent remake on 3DS that released in 2011, you’ll no doubt know exactly what to expect from Star Fox. The new one. The second remake. The one coming to Nintendo Switch 2 later this month. Still following?
Confusing to the layman Nintendo’s unusual (and oddly persistent) naming convention for this series may be, but the reality is that this is the third time Nintendo 64’s Star Fox game has been entirely remade from the ground up in as many decades. As such, how it’ll hit you will be entirely dependent on your history with the franchise.
Having now played Nintendo Switch 2’s fresh incarnation of Star Fox for roughly two hours at a preview event, I’ll say there’s at least a definite attempt here to give the 33-year-old game a fresh coat of paint and wash away the taste of Star Fox Zero out of people’s mouths - with mostly great results. Other than that, though, it’s very much the same air combat game people adore, complete with a few new multiplayer modes and the ability to now switch to a first-person cockpit view.
Said additions are hardly game-changers though. However, for the purposes of introducing a new generation of players to this wildly entertaining rail shooter and its charming cast of characters following Fox’s recent appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie? Star Fox, the third remake that is, seems set to accomplish its mission.
