Marvel's Wolverine is shaping up to be a great way to unleash havoc as the comic book world's foremost mutant, bottling his rage and passion into a cathartic third-person action game that promises a surprisingly emotional story.
The first thing you get to do in Marvel’s Wolverine on PS5 is ‘SNIKT!’ out the character’s claws in classic fashion by pressing the L2 and R2 buttons simultaneously. And much like how good it felt to shoot out that first web and then attach it to a building in order to swing in Marvel's Spider-Man (2018), this was the only evidence I needed to suggest that Insomniac has once again perfectly understood what it means to place you in the spandex of one of Marvel’s most famous superheroes.
This feeling only deepened the further into my two-hour preview I ventured. You’re not just playing Wolverine, you are Wolverine. And by mixing in other iconic aspects such as the character’s rage, brutality, and empathy for his fellow mutants, this is clearly the studio’s main goal. So far it’s making for an unabashedly epic cinematic character action game that may very well serve as the definitive origin story for the mutant who is really good at what he does (even if what he does famously isn’t very nice).
