Be free.

This is some sort of mantra I've been repeating to my mother over the years, in hopes of encouraging her to just sit and enjoy the moment. She tends to be very schedule-oriented. Whereas Ivana and I tend to... be free. The 5 of us (my parents, Ivana and I, and baby Jean) have been traveling together for over a month now, and our different travel styles (life styles, really) sometimes become apparent.

Example: Every single day, and I mean that literally: every. single. day. My mother will ask "what time should we have dinner tonight?"

....

Now, and I say this without the slightest bit of hyperbole, Ivana and I-- having lived together for more than 3 years, and then traveling together for more than 6 years now-- have never asked each other this once. Really! Ivana and I have eaten dinner together nearly everyday for 10 years, and we've never once made a plan for what optimal dinner time should be.

Here's the twist: somehow, we've not starved to death... not even once.

And so, let's talk about Austin, Texas.

I had heard a lot about this place before arriving, mainly: it's the progressive stronghold in the otherwise conservative Texas, Joe Rogan has a comedy club there, and 6th street is a great party street, if you can get past all the homelessness. So, we ventured around to see what it was really like.

First things first: how have we not heard about the river?!?! We couldn't believe our eyes. The population of Austin is around 1 million people, and yet the riverfront is seriously gorgeous. It's a refreshing bit of pristine, relaxing, and seemingly unpolluted nature to enjoy, literally minutes from the downtown. I can't remember another city having a riverfront like the one in Austin. Wow.

Second: How did I not know that Texas A&M is in Austin? What this means to a huge football fan like myself is: the 100,000 seat stadium that the Longhorns play at is in Austin! This massive university (and massively popular football team) is probably why there are so many young people walking around, excercising, and enjoying the riverfront. The whole area was like a huge, clean, organized college campus. Just great.

And then we saw it: the BEER sign. Right in the middle of the river. Must've been a sandbar?-- there were 40-50 people drifting aimlessly in various man-powered craft (kayak, stand up paddle board, infatable mattress, driftwood, whatever) and a young lady floating in the middle of the pack, with a clearly homemade sign that said "BEER". The entire scene, with the green/aqua water, the skyline in the background, wow. These people clearly understood the assignment: be free.

Austin, Texas is a great place to travel. I wish we had more time there. I'm cautiously confident I felt the vibe people talk about. I wish I could come back another Sunday, and join in on the beer-in-the-river-floatathon. I wish I could bring my mom down there. I know the water temperature/ sun screen/ mosquitos would be an ongoing issue, but, it was an inviting place. And something I won't forget.

Thanks for reading.

Be free.
