In the mid-1970s, technological advances in portable, broadcast quality television cameras and videotape recorders brought Electronic News Gathering (ENG) to local television stations. These systems were considered a more instantaneous and less costly way to shoot news footage in the field over 16 millimeter film. Plus, when the new minicams were combined with microwave transmitters, live on-location reports became practical on a daily basis.

These three promos aired on WBZ-TV/Boston in 1976 when the station introduced its ENG technology -- marketed as the "Instant Eye" -- to local newscasts.
