Stan Wawrinka has revealed he was hiking in the Swiss mountains when he received the call from tournament organisers that he would be granted a wildcard to take part at the US Open.
The 41-year-old, who is retiring at the end of the season, thought he had missed out on the chance to play at one last Grand Slam after being overlooked in the initial batch of wildcards.
But on Wednesday American Patrick Kypson, who had got a wild card, withdrew through injury allowing the USTA to made a dramatic U-turn.
Wawrinka plays Italian Matteo Berrettini, the former Wimbledon runner-up, in an eye-catching first-round match on Monday.
