Realistic feathers don’t come from painting every single feather. They come from learning how to see what actually matters.🪶

When I paint birds, I focus much more on structure, variation, and suggestion than on copying the reference photo exactly.

Before I even touch my brush, I take a few minutes to really observe. I look for small, medium, and large feathers, where they overlap, how their direction changes, and where they group together 👀

Those tiny feathers? They can often be suggested with just a few light flicking strokes. Medium and larger feathers I treat more like simple shapes.

In my sketch, I make sure I understand how those shapes overlap, because that’s what helps me plan my shadows later on ✏️

Larger shadow shapes created by clusters of feathers, and smaller ones from individual overlaps, are what visually separate the feathers and create believable depth. That’s where realism actually comes from, not detail overload.

By slowing down to observe first and thinking about the bird as a three-dimensional form, I can paint more loosely and confidently, without getting overwhelmed, and still end up with a result I’m happy with.
