Critical Issues Commentary | Watchman Nee Part 3 – Falsely Cleaving Spirit and Soul @CICministry | Uploaded September 2020 | Updated October 2024, 1 day ago.
Bob DeWaay continues sharing about his time in the Deeper Life Movement, which was heavily influenced by Watchman Nee.
Nee had an allegorical interpretation of 1Cor 3:16, which lead to his belief that the Holy Spirit only resides in one’s spirit. Nee claimed that we must learn to distinguish between our spirit and soul (mind, will, and emotions) and that we must learn how to follow only our spirit. In Nee’s theology it is not only sin that we need to be rid of, but the also the functions of the soul.
According to Nee reading the Bible with our mind, believing what it says, knowing that it is inspired by the Holy Spirit, and trusting what God has promised in the Bible may make us a “soulish” (carnal) Christian.
We do not need to divide up our spiritual anatomy to be sanctified. God deals with us as a whole person, and He is “at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure” (Phil 2:13).
