At the CBS Vice Presidential Debate Tuesday, Ohio Sen. JD Vance acknowledged that parts of the Affordable Care Act, especially broadly popular ones, should remain in place, while vaguely arguing other parts of the law, also known as Obamacare, should be improved.

“We currently have laws and regulations in place right now to protect people with preexisting conditions. We want to keep those regulations in place, but we also want to make the health insurance marketplace function a little bit better,” Vance said, without giving more detail on how to accomplish that.

In response, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz defended the ACA’s individual mandate, and said that congressional Republicans “fought tooth and nail” to dismantle the act.

With just more than a month to go before Election Day Vance and Walz met for their first and only vice presidential debate on Oct. 1, hosted by CBS in New York.
