Melting Aluminium with my waste oil Burner. Running on Used vegetable or waste motor oil this Burner provides huge amounts of free heat for scrapping or other heating applications.
This burner fires downwards to make melting without a furnace and seperating metals easy. With approx 200Kw output it has the power for most heating applications.
This waste oil burner was built about 5 years ago and recently found in my metal pile.IT will run on any waste oil be it used cooking oil or used engine oil. I normally use WVO ( waste Vegetable oil) but when I change the oil on my cars I get rid of the WMO ( waste motor oil) in the burners.
The heat output from the burner is about the same with either waste engine oil or waste cooking oil. The burner has a number of uses from metal meltal melting or metal casting in furnaces and foundrys to heating kilns for pottery or as a shed or water heater depending on how the burners are set up and how much waste oil they are burning.
The design is basically a pipe in pipe design with a side air entry, The waste oil it fed into the burner through the air stream and goes between the outer pipe and the inner one which runs full length internally and is heated by the exhaust flame. This vaporizes the waste oil and allows it to burn with the incoming air supplied by a 1/2 Hp centrifugal blower.
The flame is then discharged into the furnace or object to be heated or melted.
The unit is started by feeding in LPG gas through a T fitting in the fuel line. The unit is allowed to backfire to start the gas burning internally and heat the pre charge of oil. Once the oil heats up and the yellow flame is seen, the gas is shut off and the unit runs on waste oil only. The burner does function perfectly with LPG as well as oil. It was impossible however to get anywhere near full output on the burner when supplying gas at bottle pressure through the 1/8" gas line even when the bottle was fully opened.
Vertical discharge can be changed to horizontal with the addition of a simple 90o Bend clamped on the bottom.
The Downward design was initially decided upon so the unit could be sat on top of a larger tube with 180o bend that could be placed on the bottom of a 44 gallon drum to go into the liquid to be heated and back out again. This design still has merit in efficiency and low cost.
This waste oil burner in my estimation was developing around 100-150Kw output in my estimation judging from the heat and fuel consumption. Over all consumption is determined by the amount of fuel and air supplied and heat output required. There is no fixed consumption.
As can be seen at the start of the fire up, the flame output can be widely controlled and with a more powerful blower could burn more oil and have an even greater output.
