Washington, D.C. weekend trip reality check! We planned a short Washington, D.C. road trip with our granddaughter to visit the Smithsonian museums, National Mall, White House, Lincoln Memorial, National Archives, and U.S. Capitol — but our plans fell apart when our guided tour was canceled at the last minute due to major road closures.
In this video, I’m sharing what it was really like visiting Washington, D.C. in the summer heat, dealing with crowds, timed-entry tickets, Metro passes, Uber rides, blocked views, and last-minute changes. We had planned an air-conditioned guided tour to help us see the major D.C. landmarks, but when that was canceled, we had to quickly create our own Plan B.
We visited the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of Natural History, the White House area, the Lincoln Memorial, the National Archives, and the U.S. Capitol. Some things were wonderful, some were frustrating, and some were definitely not what I remembered from past visits to Washington, D.C.
I had been to Washington, D.C. before as a child and later with my own children, but this was my first time visiting with my granddaughter. It made the trip meaningful, even when the weekend did not go as planned.
I’ll share what worked, what didn’t, what we would do differently next time, and whether staying near the National Mall was worth the extra cost. If you are planning a Washington, D.C. weekend trip, especially in summer, I hope this helps you prepare for the heat, crowds, transportation, food lines, timed tickets, and the possibility that your perfect itinerary may need a backup plan.
