Good day! This is a piano instrumental version of the German patriotic song “Was ist des Deutschen Vaterland,” written in by Ernst Moritz Arndt (1769-1860).
The original tune did not become popular, and a new tune written by Gustav Reichardt (1797-1884). Reichardt’s tune became very popular with the German population that desired the German Confederation to become an empire. Reichardt was born in the same year that Joseph Haydn composed the famous “Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser,” which would later become the musical basis for Deutschlandlied.
The text poses the German question and envisions a German state consisting of all the German-speaking European lands. The “German question” was a debate in the 1800s over how to unify German lands into a united Germany. Two prominent solutions were “Großdetuschland” and “Kleindeutschland” (Greater Germany and Lesser Germany). The former included all the lands inhabited by Germans, while the latter excluded Austria.
