The Mutiny on the Bounty is one the most infamous episodes in maritime history. Hollywood blockbusters and more than two thousand books have moulded the popular understanding of the mutiny. But could the truth be startlingly different to the myths? Captain Bligh is renowned throughout the world as a cruel tyrant whose vicious and violent command provoked his crew to the last resort of mutiny. Fletcher Christian is remembered as a hero who saved the downtrodden crew from the hardships of Bligh’s evil leadership. For the first time ever, this film will demonstrate that a wide range of historical sources and the work of eminent historians tell a very different story. In this program we will embark on an epic journey with a living descendant of Captain Bligh to prove that Bligh was in fact the true hero of the Bounty.
