"Surtur The Swarthy One," attested in the Poetic Edda, compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources, and the Prose Edda, written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson. In both sources, Surtr is foretold as being a major figure during the events of Ragnarök; carrying his bright sword, he will go to battle against the Æsir, and the major god Freyr of the Vanir. Afterward, the flames that he brings forth will engulf the Earth.
Surtur's arrival is apart of a prophecy which includes a long viscous era of pestilence and famine. Although the tale is told a hundred times over and a hundred times different, Surtur is able to gain access to Asgard through the Aesir's desperation to find food and minerals venturing far out into dangerous areas. Muspelheim to be exact. It is here that Surtur gains the scent of seared Asguardian flesh and his conquest to ravage Asgard begins. Surtur is accompanied by other Jötunn assisting his gruesome assault on Asgard. The prophecy is as follows;
"Surtur moves from the south
with the scathe of branches:
there shines from his sword
the sun of Gods of the Slain."
