[Synopsis]
In this video, I use the Mig-23M, Mig-23MLD, and Mig-23ML in arcade air battles on the Ladago map.
The Mig-23 is my favorite Soviet aircraft of the 1970s and 1980s. The variable geometry wing design makes it stand out. When the aircraft is flying at very high speeds, the wing sweeps, and at lower speeds the wing is at a less steep angle.
The Mig-23 can engage in beyond visual range combat with its Sapphire-23 radar, and it can scan targets up to 54 kilometers. It uses this radar in conjunction with its R-23, and R-24 semi-active radar homing missiles. The Sapphire-23 radar enabled this aircraft to have look down and shoot down capabilities in Beyond Visual Range combat. You can use radar guided guns with this aircraft when you get a radar lock. This makes it easier to use your 23mm cannons to engage aircraft at close ranges. It takes the guess work out of aiming. The Mig-23 has IRST(Infrared Search Target) mode, which enables you to get infrared locks with your IR missiles, like the R-60M, R-23T, or R-24T. You can use the infrared seeker, but the IRST isn't a radar lock so it doesn't alert the targeted aircraft.
The Mig-23 was designed for speed, like a lot of fighters in the 1960s and 1970s. Fighters of that era were designed to intercept nuclear bombers. The Mig-23 is very fast with a top speed of Mach 2.35 at 30,000 feet, and a top speed of Mach 1.14 at lower altitudes.
When I use this aircraft I use it as it was intended to be used, which is as a hit and run fighter. The Mig-23 is not very maneuverable, so you should never try to get into a dogfight with this aircraft. If you try to get into a turn fight, you will lose a lot of speed pretty quickly. This will make you vulnerable. Since the Mig-23 is pretty fast, you should be able to escape after you launch your missiles.
The Mig-23 was in service in the U.S.S.R. from 1967 to 1991, and it was in service in Russia from 1991 to 1999 when it was retired from service. The Mig-23 was in service in 35 air forces from 1967 to the early 2000s. It was in service with the Libyan, and Syrian air force until those countries fell in 2011(Libya), and late 2024(Syria). It is still in service with the North Korea, Sudanese, Ethiopian, Angolan, and Libyan(2 aircraft) air forces today. The Mig-23 was in production from 1967 to 1985, and about 5,000 aircraft were produced during that period. The Mig-23 has a ground attack version, and this is the Mig-27. About 1047 Mig-27s were produced from 1972 to 1995. The Mig-27 is slower than the Mig-23, but it has more hard points to carry more air to ground weapons, like rockets, bombs, and guided missles/bombs.
