War is only half the story: Six words that are at the heart of the Aftermath Project. As a non-profit, grant-making organization, we are committed to telling the other half of the story of conflict -- the story of what it takes for individuals to learn to live again, to restore civil societies, to address the lingering wounds of war while struggling to create new avenues for peace. The Aftermath Project's core activity is our annual grant competition, open to working photographers, world-wide. We amplify the work of our grant winners and finalists -- and the aftermath issues they highlight -- through our annual publication, educational outreach, exhibitions, workshops and lectures.

This Kickstarter campaign will support publication of our fifth book, "War Is Only Half the Story, Vol 5," featuring the work of grant winner Davide Monteleone ("Red Thistle -- the Northern Caucasus Journey"), and finalists Elizabeth Herman ("Women Warriors: Bangladesh"), Lara Ciarabellini and Massimo Mastrorillo ("Bosnia and Herzegovina -- If Chaos Awakens the Madness"), Carolos Javier Ortiz ("Too Young to Die") and Miquel Dewever-Plana ("Guatemala: The Other War").
We're very fortunate that the National Endowment for the Arts has supported our book publication for the past three years. But they don't cover the whole cost -- they give us a matching grant of $15,000 and we need to raise the rest of the money.
This year, the NEA also gave us a $20,000 matching grant to redesign and relaunch our website as a resource-rich, interactive, educational site where you'll be able to see all of our grant winners' and finalists' work, as well as the visual literacy/aftermath curriculum we created with Facing History and Ourselves, and where you'll also be able to interact with our grant winner each year and where you can also be part of a special online digital book.
We've set our fundraising goal at $23,500 -- $15,000 for our book, and $8,500 to go towards the matching grant for the website. Of course we'd love your partnership in helping us to reach $35,000, the full total of our combined NEA grant this year. Anything above our Kickstarter goal of $23,500 will go directly towards that goal.
We're committed to helping photographers tell these critical stories -- and to getting them out there to a wide public audience. We need your help to make it happen -- and in exchange, we've got some great rewards for you.
