Bushrangers roamed the countryside from the early days of the colony. They struck fear into the hearts of law-abiding citizens and committed terrible crimes. The discovery of gold caused a huge rise in bushranging and during the 1860s hundreds of men were arrested and punished. Yet today, despite their crimes, bushrangers are sometimes thought of as heroes or larrikins – because they challenged police and broke the law. But at the time they were active most people thought they were just criminals who belonged in jail.

During this interactive session students will have the opportunity to:
Hear from bushrangers, including the notorious Captain Moonlite
Think like historians – looking at evidence including objects, artworks and documents
Watch a bushranger trial – learn about the consequences for bushrangers who were caught
Create a ‘Wanted!’ poster – start it during the session and finish it in class
Creative Arts activity
At the end of the session we will introduce an activity to follow it - to design your own 'Wanted Poster' for Moonlite, the bushranger we meet in the session (factsheet will be provided).
In your poster you need to consider your perspective on Moonlite, and highlight the features that aptly draw the bushranger's character.
What you will need
You can choose to do the poster on paper or via your laptops on a program such as Paint.
Students will use the fact sheet on the bushrangers that we will provide via a link.
