If you want to have a more extraordinary family here is one thing you can do: love your spouse well.

This creates several important things for your children.

It creates: Identity.

“We love each other and we love you because you are our child and we are your parents.” The love my parents had for each other defined who I was. I was the son of 2 human beings who loved each other.

It creates: Security.

Knowing that my parents loved each other made me more secure. Our kids are drawn to our love. Don’t believe me? If you have young kids you can test this out by hugging each other in the middle of the kitchen floor. I predict that, if you do that, you will have little kids hugging your legs before no time! Kids are just drawn to the love their parents have for each other.

It creates: Vitality.

When we love each other well, we create a world that is safe, nurturing, and life-giving. The love between a father and mother is like a fence surrounding and protecting our kids. When our kids don’t have to worry about being vulnerable to “bad things,” they can relax, play, grow, and live!

So…

Be easy to love. Focus on making it easy for your spouse to love you. Work hard. Live with integrity. Be humble.

Be kind.

Be generous.

Be thoughtful.

Be considerate.

Let’s do these things and maybe, one day in the future, we’ll overhear our kids talking about how magical their childhood was, too.
