The famed 20th century composer Dmitri Shostakovich didn’t just write music that reflected the often tragic and bleak nature of life in the Soviet Union—as “Waltz No.2” from his Suite for Variety Orchestra shows, Shostakovich’s music can be charming and delectable. Commonly used in films, TV shows, and commercials, this beautiful movement first came to prominence when Stanley Kubrick featured it in the movie, Eyes Wide Shut.
