Walmart is using a $2.9 billion U.S. tariff refunds to temporarily lower prices on 11,000 items, it said Thursday, particularly on groceries and general merchandise.
Walmart is trying to contain prices as it is squeezed by the same pressures hammering the American consumer, namely rising energy costs due to fighting in Iran and gas prices above $4 per gallon.
Grocery prices are shaping up as a key midterm election issue. President Donald Trump campaigned on bringing them down, but a new poll find 41% of Americans are concerned about being able to afford groceries over the new few months, up from 24% in April.
