New River Path Walk Day 1 - from Hertford to Cheshunt. The New River was completed in 1613 as a scheme to bring fresh drinking water into the City of London. The Elizabethan population boom has left London short of drinking water and Edmund Colthurst's aqueduct backed by Hugh Myddleton still provides London with around 8-10% of London's drinking water. The walk starts on the River Lea near Hertford, and ends at the New River Head in Islington and totals around 28 miles. This section of the walk passes through Ware, Amwell, Stanstead Abbotts, Rye, Broxbourne, Wormley, Turnford and Cheshunt. Day 2 of the walk is in a separate video on this channel.
