Wahlert Turkey Trot 2025 in Dubuque, Iowa. There’s a 5 mile option (2 laps) and a 2.5 mile option (1 lap), and if you win your age group, you get a frozen turkey. Last year, I tried to win my age group in the 5 mile and came in second. This year, I figured I’d try for the 1 lap race and see if I could win in the shorter distance.
I’m currently in the taper for. Valencia Marathon in about 10 days, so I tried not to take it out too hard in the 200’ drop first mile. Things felt pretty decent at that point, but then the race becomes increasingly uphill until the last 200m of the race which is rolling but also a bit uphill.

I think I managed to run this race as intended. Hard enough to make my brain panic but no so hard that I was risking injury or perhaps digging too hard too close to the marathon. I would have loved to win a turkey this year, but even if I had run this race all-out, I’m not sure I could have caught #1. But there’s always next year.
