Time to do some more work on the Renault/VW Beetle rat rod/hot rod project here at Rat Rods for Africa. If you've ever wanted to know how and why caster shims are fitted to a VW Beetle, this is the video to watch!
I start with a test fit of the 1959 Renault body onto the freshly rebuild rolling Beetle floor pan. Then I interrupt myself to make and fit caster shims whilst the front suspension is easily accessible.
This leads to a visual exploration with a working model. We first look at what caster angle is and what it does. Then we find out whether a change in ride height will affect caster angle and what changes the use of caster shims will bring about.
I prove that all the YouTube videos on this topic get it wrong in one way or another!
