Gold was discovered in the area in 1863 by Henry Wickenburg. The Vulture mine was considered one of the richest of its time, and an 80-stamp mill was built. It wasn’t long before the community grew to around 5,000. The Post Office opened in 1880 closing in 1897.
The mine was in production from 1863 until 1942 producing 340,000 ounces of gold and 260,000 ounces of silver. Like so many mines, it closed because of the war efforts, and soon the town became abandoned.
Today's property is under new ownership and lovingly restored to its original stature. Visitors can explore the ghost town, complete with hundreds of artefacts.
Ghost adventures have investigated and voices, shadows, noises and other paranormal activities have been caught on camera.
Currently, Vulture City is open daily for a fee of $15 per person, and more information is on their website. www.VultureCityTours
