The video game arrangement theme this time around was "cross-bosses," that is, classic exhilarating pieces of boss music arranged in the style of a different game! That's right, we're not finished: in an exceptionally rare event, the poll didn't just decide the winning arrangement, it decided the order in which all of the arrangements are published! I've completed all three of the boss music arrangements in their alternate styles, and this is the second in the trio!
This arrangement takes the piano intro and theme for battling Cynthia, the champion of Pokémon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, and orchestrates it in the style of a modern Monster Hunter game, meaning a cinematic orchestra with lots of thunderous percussion! This was such a fun project, I always like figuring out how gestures and textures can scale to an orchestra's caliber. It certainly evokes that this is less of a standard Pokémon-on-Pokémon battle and more of a giant creature barreling straight at you! And stick to the end for a fun twist on the battle's victory theme!
Painting the thumbnail for this one was just as fun as arranging the music. The goal was definitely to depict a Pokémon as one of Monster Hunter's enormous monsters, and since it had to be from Cynthia's team, the choice was easily narrowed to her Garchomp as a Plesioth. I also designed some Giratina armor and a Dialga sword for the hunter in this art, so they're clearly experienced with powerful monsters... though they appear to have some trouble contending with the Garchomp's unexpectedly broad hit range...
Instruments used:
• Piano - Logic Studio Piano
• Large drum ensemble - East West StormDrum
• Piccolo & flute: East West Hollywood Woodwinds
• Lead trumpets - AcousticSamples VHorns
• Trumpet & horn sections - East West Hollywood Brass
• Trombones - AcousticSamples VHorns
• Bass trombone & tuba - East West Hollywood Brass
• Timpani, bass drum, snare drum, & cymbal - East West Hollywood Percussion
• Cabasa - Logic Studio Percussion
• Harp - East West Hollywood Harp
• Lead violins - East West Fantasy Strings
• String section - East West Hollywood Strings
• Vibraphone - Waffles's Instrument Hoard
• Solo violin - Performance Samples Solo Violin Legato
