Back in 2017 I released a video based on the Whisky Buyer's ABCDs; a mnemonic I'd devised to help me answer a simple question when faced with a whisky purchase "Who is this whisky made for?" By checking it against the ABCDs there was a good chance I'd be able to determine where it was pitched; that is: A - Age Statement, B - Bottling Strength, C - Chill Filtered and finally D - Dye (is it coloured?)
It's not perfect but it worked for me at the time - and many of you too. I also had some opinions to share about these things which have, more or less, stayed pretty intact since. But they have moved. A little. A lot changes in five years of whisky and everyone should try to reserve the right to change their minds about these things, don't you think? So, rather than just lineup another tranche of fine, interesting and very current bottles to share (I have!), uncork them and share my initial thoughts (I will!), how about we apply the ABCDs in 2022 and ask if they're still valid, where they may be flawed and what's changed in the intervening years?
